Buy ItNov 10, 2009
By Diligent Shopper Two months ago I bought the Hamilton Beach 31507 which I am told by HB is the same as this one, only without the stainless steel front. If you are looking for a toaster oven that does not take up much space yet holds a 9" cake pan, this is the one for you. It bakes, it broils, and voila it toasts evenly. You just have to experiment a little bit as to whether to choose the light toast icon or the dark icon. Just remember to turn the timer dial past 10 and then back to your toast setting. We have baked and broiled chicken breasts and fish, have heated up vegetable filled croissants. Made open faced sandwiches. Everything came out perfectly. There are two slot heights for the rack, and the rack itself is configured to be used high or low. The slide out crumb pan is very convenient. The only negative is that the bake pan while sturdy seems to have a thin coating which I think will break down over time. If that happens I will just get another bake pan. One thing to look out for when searching for a toaster oven is how hot the outside gets. They all get hot, especially on top and the glass door, but some OTHER BRANDS we tried got to the point of SIZZLING. The 31507 one does not get to that point, but I wonder if having a stainless steel front and top or not makes the difference.

I was a little dissapointed wit this oven, not as user friendly as I was hoping for and the controls are not designed well. I'm going to replace it when I find a better unit.

I don't like this toaster/oven bad rack designMay 18, 2010

The toaster is hard to control your toast level. It is an imprecise dial you can never get the same level of toasting twice in a row so you are forced to really keep an eye on the toast. The only good thing is that you have a nice sized window to see in clearly. If you want to only make toast, don't get this. The wire rack could be dangerous IMO. When it is pulled out to extract your toast, it has a tendency to slip out toward you, of course it is very hot. So now I don't pull the rack out, but a tiny bit and gingerly stick my hand or a fork in to bring the toast to me, not the rack. Not a good way of doing it. It does have a nice bottom flat plate that I think is just for keeping it clean, very easy to pull out and wash out allowing you to keep the unit clean. With my previous toaster/ovens that don't usually last long, I would toast and cook occasionally small things like fish or even have tried a single steak. I don't use this unit for the reasons stated. Don't feel comfortable other than making toast. I suggest looking at other products, I would not at all recommend this to anyone for any cooking. I never leave poor reviews like this, ever. I just reviewed the manufacturers description and realized that the plate that I thought was to be used to catch crumbs at the bottom is actually a baking plate. I think this is such a shallow indent for the juices of anything that it would be even more unsafe than the wire rack that falls out at you if pulled out more than 50% of the total distance of the rack. (sad thing is that I got this for a Christmas present from the family so I use it anyway, otherwise I would have returned it or thrown it away). It seems sturdily built outside, which is bad for me, because I was hoping it would break and I could get a different unit.
In fairness, I have not tried to cook other than toast for the reasons above, I will agree with others' statement, it does not get unreasonably hot on the outside of the toaster ovens like some others I have had in the past. That is a good thing. I think the 6 pieces of toast is accurate but you have a good chance of loosing them to the bottom on either edge of the wire rack (I have) unless you are careful about it. I just do 4 pieces for peace of mind. My unit does not have a the deep baking pan as shown in the picture but I just checked the back and it is also a model number 31507. I thought maybe I forgot about it but I just checked where I would put some tray like that and I don't think I received one with it 6 months ago. Don't know if it didn't come with it or it was left out by accident, I don't know.
First bad review in a very long time. I thought others should know and always appreciate others leaving truthful reviews for the many other products I buy on Amazon.
