My wife and i rotate this thing back and forth, you can use it at any "down-time" point, and you can fluctuate how you utilize it. For example, you can squeeze it with your finger tips for a series of repetitions, then you can squeeze it with the area just past your first knuckle (from finger tip towards base of hand) in repetitions, then hold it firmly in the inner most pocket area of your hand and squeeze in repetitions. You can also switch the squeezing action a bit by turning the the gripper so the finger grooves are against the palm instead of the fingers, and grip it tightly while doing repetitions.
The foam rubber has help up nicely, and the resistance hasn't gone bad either, and we use it regularly since purchase date. This is a worthwhile buy.
