5Works For MeJul 26, 2009
By C. MCNEAL
While every experience is different and personal, this razor has been great for me. I will try to tell you why.

If you are expecting to just yank this unit out of the box and get a great shave, let me know how that goes for you. In general, I have found that you have to sort of "tweak" your shaving routine using this razor (oh, and follow the instructions).

I have read that some people do not like the trimmer. I can see where this might be the case. It's a little less than precision. So, I do not use it myself for all kinds of trimming. However, I do use it as part of my daily shaving routine. For me, it works better if I use the trimmer to go over the entire face first, and then follow up with the electric razor, which then gives me a very close shave (but not so close as to cause bumps). You see, the trimmer actually sort-of scratches the skin a little, which has the effect of dislodging and redirecting hairs that may be trying to grow back into the skin. Then those hairs stand up and can be cut by the razor when it passes over. This may not make sense at first, but trust me, it is the reason I get a good shave and do not get razor bumps. Yes, I would get a good shave without the trimmer, but I get a much better one with it. I do not, however, use it to trim my mustache (but I do use it for my sideburns and back of the neck).

I have to remind myself that the primary purpose of this razor is to keep me from getting razor bumps, and that any trimming job it does, is icing on the cake.

As a testimony, it is 4:03 p.m. as I write this, and my face still feels smooth as a baby's behind, even though I shaved early this morning! Plus, I do not have razor bumps, which I used to have all the time! This shaver has been everything I expected and more. Again, every man is different, and for some, this just does not work. Yet, for me, the problems were minimal-or-non-existent. I got what I paid for, and more...and no, I do not work for this company or any of its affiliates(smile).

Additionally, though some have said they get better results when using a pre-shave lotion, I do not use any lotions or creams before shaving. Some people can do that, but I find it works better for me the other way around...I use those kinds of things (electric shave lotion, toners, aloe-vera, or after-shaves) afterward. When I was doing it the other way, I wasn't getting as close a shave. That said, I have been using this razor for several years now and am 100% satisfied. I have had maybe one or two bumps (no joke) since I started using this razor. I have never known ANY other device to so the same thing, and I've been shaving and experimenting for at least 40 years!

It may be a little loud for some people; I guess, but the noise is nothing, really. I have noticed it more on the trimmer side, but even then, it is not off-putting to me. Besides, I would rather get the fine shave I am getting, than get a worse shave from a quieter model. It may also be good to remember that my opinion is based upon the fact that at the time I bought this unit, I was looking for something less expensive...so a quieter sound may be optional.

Anyway, this works well for me, but I had to learn the best way to do it. I did not have trouble with how the unit worked. It did not eat my skin at any time. It is fast. It does a great job. Incidentally, the battery is incredible, and allows the unit to remain strong for many shaves, especially if you plug it in between shaves...great if you travel a lot!

I hope this helps, if you are trying to decide if this is the one for you. Not everyone will have the same experience, but it may help to know that not everyone has had a nightmare experience either.
Cheers!

1Lawnmower for my faceDec 12, 2008
By Curly Beard "Likes a good shave."
I have used a Remington Black Men's Electric Shaver for over 5 years with great results. The only problem is they don't make it anymore as far as I can tell and my current one has a nick in the screen that scratches my face. So I tried this bump free Wahl. It basically did not do as advertised. It was supposed to trim the whiskers above the surface so that they don't curl back in under the skin like lift and cut or close shave razors do. This Wahl basically took off a top layer of skin and lifted pulled and chewed out most of my whiskers while just laying some down without cutting them at all.

I've decided to go to the disposable type black men's bump control razor I can get at Walmart. While it takes me a little longer to shave than electric, it is doing the type of job my old Remington did.

Hope this helps. If you want bump control for curly facial hair, DO NOT BUY THIS!!!

5smooth as a razor without the irritation.Oct 01, 2007

This shaver is worth its weight in gold. It gets so close but doesn't leave your face feeling burned. I recommended this shaver to my brother who is now a happy user as well.

5The solution to my shaving woes.Jan 21, 2011
By Blue
I'm an african american man who is entering into the US Military soon. As such, I'll need to shave, everyday. Normally I'd never shave because to do so would be a painful experience. It would expose the razor bumps I had while adding more.

Using a manual razor didn't work. And it's not because blacks can't use razors. I'll be the first to admit it was my technique. Be it the angle, the pressure, finding the grain which is difficult since it goes all over the place, in the end I'd end up covered in nicks and even more ingrown hairs, regardless of whether it was a cheap bic or a skin flaying 4 blade monster. In the end I wasn't willing to trial and error my face until it was covered in scars.

I tried a Norelco rotary. The problem with that was shaving with the grain didn't cut nearly low enough, and shaving against did what it said it would do. Lift and cut, causing the hair to fall under the skin and cause the hair to get trapped and insane amounts of swelling and weeks of me trying to get it out. So that didn't work either.

Then I saw this. A foil shaver, and not only that, but one that is specifically designed in a number of ways to prevent razor bumps and irritation. It works like an absolute dream. It cuts low, so that it's AT, the skin level, so even going against the grain I can barely feel it, if I can feel it at all. It doesn't irritate the skin whatsoever so my face doesn't feel raw after sliding it across my face. It's a little loud but I'm not gonna trade a loud quality shave for the quiet tugging and pulling I experienced with the norelco and the bumps.

A word of warning, this is pretty much only for cutting stubble. And by that I mean you need to use it everyday. It's perfect for cutting about 24 hours of growth, and pretty much nothing else. The good thing is it comes with a small battery powered clipper addition that can be used to get it trimmed down to stubble length, then followed up with the Super Close as it's labeled. So in conjunction they work excellently if you go a few days without shaving.

So yea, this was a first review so excuse me if it's a little long winded, I'm just thrilled to have FINALLY found something that works consistently, every time, with no hassle.

5Works very WellMay 18, 2009
By d wilson "Visitor from a Perpendicular Universe"
I have had a similar history as one other reviewer. Razors left me with razor bumps so I used a set of hair trimmers. This leaves a 5 o'clock shadow at 7:00 a.m. which was not much of a problem when I was younger with black hair. Now that I have gray speckles my gray stubble looks like powdered donut dust. I was skeptical about spending so much on an electric razor as my experience with them in the past was equally bad as razors.

Pros: Closer shave than with trimmers or 'bump-free' razors. Powerful battery. Easy to clean. Close-cutting trimming attachment. NO BUMPS!

Cons: Loud, but that adds to the manly factor. It does leave some some areas not as close as others but you can use the trimmer attachment for hard-to-get hair. The foil shreds easily if too much pressure if used. It's easy to apply too much pressure if the first past does not not cut close enough.

Make no false assumptions. I'm not going to have as smooth a face as I had at 14yo but it is much smoother than what I had from 24 to 34 yo.
