Know what you drinkAug 27, 2010
By GC617289 Knowing how many particulates are in your water helps you decide how to use that water; drinking, cooking, washing, plant irrigation, etc. Living in the Phoenix, AZ area guarantees safe but hard, particle-rich water. The Intellitec tester consistently gives the following readings (in ppm, or parts per million):
Outside faucet: 700 - 800 (local water has daily variations in quality)
Bottled, flavored drinking water: 500 - 600
Inside faucet (softener, whole-house filter with standard cartridge ... GE FXUSC): 450
Inside faucet (softener, whole house filter with carbon sediment cartridge ... GE FXWTC): 350
Reverse osmosis dedicated faucet: 35
The Intellitec tester confirms our decision to use the RO water for drinking and cooking ... and to avoid commercially bottled water.
The only "con" I have is the tester's on/off switch. It works inconsistently; one has to get used to the correct amount of pressure for it to turn on!

Not useful for any purposeJul 21, 2010
By Jimbob Dunk this device into water and a number will appear on the display. The bigger the number, the less pure the water is. That is the use of this product, hence my saying it is not useful for any purpose.
As mentioned by another reviewer, this tester does NOT indicate water safety.
This tester is not a TDS meter. The number displayed has no particular relation to TDS (Total Dissolved Solids, parts per million). Nor is the unit able to be calibrated. As such it is not a TDS meter. To the manufacturer's credit, they don't claim that it is. (But another reviewer does).
My hope was that I could use this unit to determine when to change a RO membrane, even though I knew the reading was not correct TDS--thinking that the ratio between input and output water would be correct, even if the individual measurements weren't. Not so, as the relationship between the reading and TDS is not linear. I have this unit now HM Digital Pocket Size TDS Meter TDS-4 Water Quality Tester and it works great.

Inexpensive water testerNov 02, 2010
By SidG Water tester gave reading immediately. Unfortunately, I didn't have too many different samples to test, so couldn't independently gauge accuracy, but checked straight tap water vs. reverse osmosis filter water, and RO water rated better, so it's at least relatively accurate. Don't get me wrong, it might be perfectly accurate, I just didn't have the means to test it well. For my needs it was fine.

good product. use it all the time and it's accurate. I wouldn't want to drink water without it.
